The Evaluation Team

Posted on January 25, 2016 by Linda

Recently I was invited to participate in an evaluation team for Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence, to review a funding proposal.

I was pleased to have this opportunity, because it enabled me to provide my expertise, on a volunteer basis, to assist the Government of Canada in making important funding decisions. This is Canadian taxpayer money we are working with; this is important.

I was struck by the expertise and variable skillsets of my fellow team members. All had at least 25 years’ of relevant experience in business, academia or research. All were highly skilled in their areas of expertise. And all had the experience behind them to know what would work and what would not work.

As well, the team at Canada’s Network for Centres of Excellence did a good job of compiling a roster of experts who each had different backgrounds and expertise.

The clincher? Even though we were all of different backgrounds and expertise, we all came together and shared the same conclusion in the end. Far easier than in the novel Twelve Angry Men.

It was amazing how six diverse experts came to a common conclusion.

Case Study – The Business Growth Strategy

Posted on November 2, 2015 by Linda

Challenge: The client had a successful business in their market niche. They were so successful that their market share was very high, leaving little room to grow. The client wanted to grow the business outside of its traditional market niche.
Intervention: We developed a strategy for business growth. This included development of the fundamental elements of a business growth strategy:
– Mission
– Vision
– Customer value proposition
– Strategic market trends, opportunities and competitors
– Strategic initiatives
– Strategic business approach for each functional area
Result: We identified ten strategic options, and from these, we used a tailored selection of criteria to identify four priority strategic options. We developed a high-level plan, with activities and dates, for pursuit of each of the strategic options. The client now is proceeding on executing its strategy for growth.

Cruising

Posted on October 26, 2015 by Linda

Cruising across the Pacific for five days and six nights reminds me of the long-term, deliberate means that I have used time and again to help companies win new, major business.

The progress seems slow and there is nothing on the horizon. We have been sidetracked by the entertainment, the casino, the restaurants, the sunshine and the bar, and have explored these accordingly. When winning new business we spend time on what helps get us there: the customer strategy, the competitor analysis, developing our own solution, writing the bid, and doing financial analysis. But eventually the reward appears.

What is important is to stay the course and keep the eye on the prize.
